Well the big day finally arrived as half of Athens took part in the annual MLK day of service. Habitat's project was to rehab the landscaping at a house which was recently donated to help end substandard housing. We had 12 bright smiling faces to show up on what may be the best workday of the year (weather wise at least). After raking and bagging what I estimate as 3 years worth of leaves, we found where the grass would grow if there were any light and spread new seed. Once we discovered that we only had enough bags for half of the yard, someone came up with the bright idea of constructing a large compost bin. Miraculously, all of the leaves fit perfectly. The planting beds were covered in new flowers and a quick power washing put the cherry on top of what was once a neglected yard. Thanks so much to those who showed up to give a little time to make a better Athens!

Celebrate Dr. King's legacy by volunteering to work on different local service projects in the morning and then celebrate in the afternoon at Lyndon House Arts Center with live music, variety shows, poetry readings and hands-on art activities. Thank you to the over volunteers that have already registered to make a difference in the community.

Score one for the greatest generation. Thanks to four of the most motivated and talented volunteers to date, we knocked out an accessibility ramp project in record time, just 3 days from start to finish. It was truly amazing to watch how a group of folks of varying skill levels could pull together, each using their strengths while picking up new ones to achieve the extraordinary. All of them traded what should have been lazy days playing golf for hard labor in sub freezing temperatures and made retirement look fun. Dottie, Roger and Tom --- You guys are the most amazing volunteers! Please come back because there are about 10 more to do this year...
