The weather this past Saturday was disgusting: wet, cold, and muddy. You would never have guessed it though! The UGA Greeks showed up in force and raised the walls of the Jackson home. Thanks to the crew at Subway 5-points, everyone was well fed and the build continued into the afternoon. For more pictures, click here.

Committee of 1000 Celebration 2009

Last night was our annual Committee of 1000 Celebration. This event is a big thank you to those who donated to Habitat over the past year. It was great to see you all! We had a good time with live music, good company, and wonderful food. After dinner there was a great speech from one of our newer homeowners, Reggie Willis. For more pictures of the event, go here.

More information on joining the Committee of 1000 and supporting affordable housing in our community can be found here. Join today and be a part of the fun next year!

What a great Saturday! Construction began on two new homes and there was awesome volunteer turn out!

We kicked off the day with an early groundbreaking ceremony. The house sponsors, Mike Grace of Wells-Fargo Home Mortgage and Wei Wang of UGA Habitat for Humanity, welcomed everyone to the site and broke ground. After a blessing from Habitat's construction manager Beau Harvey, everybody worked together at a rapid pace to install the home's flooring. Pausing only to enjoy a full lunch from Subway, the volunteer crew wrapped up in record time. For more pictures, go here.

Thanks to the Panhellenic Council, the Jackson family home also got off to a great start. Special thanks to McAlister's, who kept everyone well fed. For all the pictures from this build site, check out this album.

Right now more families than ever before are in need of decent housing. Athens Area Habitat is dedicated to serving these families and empowering them with the dream of homeownership, but we can’t do it without you. As a non-profit, we depend not only on business partners for support, but also the generous giving by individuals within the community. Your support gives hope to families like the Henson’s, a newly accepted Habitat family of a grandmother, mother, and one year old child who live in a house with no running water, no inside bathroom, and no heat. Thanks to the efforts of the community supporting our mission, the Henson Family will have a decent, affordable place to call home. With your help, this dream can be realized for many more families in our community.

The Committee of 1,000 is an opportunity to bring together individuals within the community to make a difference in the lives of a family in need. During the 2009 year, Athens Area Habitat will be placing a renewed emphasis on the Committee of 1,000. After reaching our goal of one thousand individuals joining their efforts to raise a full house sponsorship, we will begin construction on our first ever “Committee of 1,000 Home.”

Please take this opportunity to join an esteemed group of Habitat supporters by giving $65 today. As a new member, you will also be invited to attend the Committee of 1,000 Celebration on January 22, 2009. Please call 706-208-1001 for more information
