Thanks so much to everyone who came out and supported Athens Area Habitat this weekend at the Jittery Joe's Fall Classic Century & Festival! With close to 400 riders and families at the event, we raised a record amount of money to go toward our mission to break the cycle of poverty by building affordable housing in our community. Athens Habitat ReStore will hold a donation drive from 9am - 5pm on Monday. We challenge everyone in our community to find one item to donate. We have also partnered with the organization Books for Keeps (http://booksforkeeps.blogspot.com), to collect new and gently used books for children who might otherwise not have any books of their own. The collection bin is located just inside the ReStore.

5 Year Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Today marks the 5 year Anniversary of the devastating hurricane that hit the Gulf Coast, destroying thousands of homes and displacing over a million individuals from their residences. However, through the horror that was Hurricane Katrina we saw something spectacular in the forces of people who made it their duty to help those devastated by the storm. Habitat for Humanity was quick to respond by starting construction on its first hurricane response home only six weeks after the storm hit. Today, more than 2,219 homes have been built by Habitat for Humanity in response to the destruction Hurricane Katrina caused. While the destruction and horror of Katrina will scar our country for years to come, it is those who took a break from their lives to help the victims that will always be remembered. Welcome New Interns/Project Manager/Germans

Things have been a little crazy over here at Athens Area Habitat for the past couple of weeks, as we lost our Volunteer Coordinator, our Summer Interns, and our German workers. However, things are back to normal now that we have refilled all of these positions. Our new interns started on Tuesday, so be sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook to get caught up with everything we are doing over here. We would also like to welcome our new Project Manager, Wyatt Smith, who started here on Monday. Wyatt will be handling volunteer coordination, as well as any information regarding our weekly builds. You can contact Wyatt for any questions at Wyatt@athenshabitat.com. Finally, our 3 new German workers arrived late Monday night, stepping foot in the United States for their first time. The Germans will be helping out at the build sites, as well as the ReStore, so be sure to welcome them to the States if you happen to see them in the store. So as you can see, things were a little hectic before everyone got here so I apologize for any inconsistencies with blogging, twitter, craigslist, and facebook. Things are finally back to normal now.

Jittery Joe's Fall Classic Century Moved to October 30th

This years Jittery Joe's Fall Classic Century, which was originally scheduled for October 13th has been moved to the 30th. Due to a half marathon the day after our race was originally scheduled, we have decided to move it back to Halloween weekend. We do not want anyone waking up Monday morning too sore to move because they participated in both a half marathon and a Century Bike Ride. Sunday marked a very special day as Athens Area Habitat for Humanity turned 22 years old. After 22 years of service to the Athens community, Athens Area Habitat is proud to blow out the candles and is excited for many more years in the future. Come out and celebrate our anniversary on August 21st at the Farm 225 with an acoustic performance from Atlanta's Trances Arc and Athens' own Lera Lynn. The show is free, and while donations are not required, they are greatly appreciated. Without the help of the community Athens Area Habitat would not be able to thrive as it is today, so we would like to thank everyone who has made it possible for Habitat to continue to work towards its mission of eliminating substandard housing. Habitat Celebrates 22 Years on August 21st!

Athens Area Habitat for Humanity is turning 22 this week! In celebration of 22 years of service to the Athens Area Community we are throwing a birthday party concert shindig. On Saturday, August 21st Atlanta based Trances Arc will be playing an acoustic set at the Farm 225. There will be live music, free cake, and plenty of celebration to go around. So mark your calendars and spend your Saturday night listening to some good music, enjoying some good company, and supporting a good cause.

This past weekend marked the beginning of August and a great many changes in Athens. For many, the days of summer are quickly coming to a close as the beginning of the school year approaches, and parents and children alike settle into their regular routines. Another change will come as approximately 35,000 University students flood back into the area and 10,000 University faculty and staff return to work. Businesses will be busier than ever and will boast high sales as everyone scrambles to settle back into Athens. At Athens Area Habitat for Humanity, we are excited for all of these changes for a number of reasons. The beginning of the school year means the return of our UGA habitat for humanity chapter and new loads of eager volunteers for build days. Move in or move outs mean an influx of new furniture at the ReStore as well as many sales as people try to furnish their new apartments. For Habitat, August also means the beginning of another full semester of fun Athens Area Habitat sponsored events beginning with our 5K Race for the Dream on Labor Day. So far, we plan to host the return of several of our annual events including our bike race in October as well as a few new events such as World Habitat Day. With much anticipation, we look forward to the changes of August, and we encourage everyone to constantly check the website for updates on all our upcoming events!

Thursday Program Spotlight: A Brush With Kindness

A Brush With Kindness is a program designated to restore neighborhoods one home at a time through simple acts of kindness. This small projects program helps low income individuals live in a safe, decent home. The neighborhood revitalization effort provides work for low income homeowners who are challenged by age, disability, or circumstance. Like Habitat homebuilding, homeowners work side by side with volunteers to complete the restoration of their home. If you or someone who know needs, simple but necessary repairs to their house such as roof leaks, mold, broken fixtures, rewiring please call 706-208-1001 and fill out your application as soon as possible. Habitat for Humanity Ranked #8 on Builder Top 100 List!

This year and last, Habitat for Humanity has been working harder than ever and we have the ranking to prove it! I the May 2010 issue of BUILDER, Habitat for Humanity was ranked in the no. 8 spot on their 27th annual BUILDER 100 list. At a staggering 5,294 closings last year, we clinched the title of one of the top ten biggest builders in the United States. In 2008, we were ranked no. 11 meaning in just one short year we were able to jump 3 spots! At this rate, just imagine the possibilities for the 2010 poll.

As an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, the Athens Area Habitat for Humanity is proud to boast our success in helping Habitat Achieve this title. Since our inception in 1988, we have served 70 families in Clarke, Oconee, and Oglethorpe County areas. 2010 Race for the Dream:

The Race for the Dream is an annual 5k held every Labor Day to create a sense of urgency for the American dream of homeownership. A View from a Builder: Tom's Blog

170 Garnett Ridge is nearly compete! It took a while since we were working on 20 other projects but the final stage is finally here. Volunteers worked feverishly (could have been the heat) during the past two weeks touching up paint, installing light fixtures, hanging cabinets and trimming the house. Skilled workers came in this week as well to get the AC working again (just in time too!) and to plumb the kitchen and baths. If you spent any time on this house during the winter months, you should come by and see the transformation. It truly is amazing that so much was done in so few work days. The biggest projects include laying tile throughout, shoring up rotted components, painting both inside and out and laying on a completely new roof. Thanks to all of you that gave a hand in this remodel. A family in need of a decent, affordable rental will be living the good life soon.

Thursday Habitat Program Spotlight: The Committee of 1,000

The Committee of 1,000 program runs on the belief that Athens Area Habitat can bring power to the individual donation. Rather than relying solely on large donations to build homes, Habitat believes that there is strength in numbers and when a community gets together they can create something spectacular. The Committee of 1,000 reaches out to the community with the idea that if 1,000 people donated $65 a year to Athens Area Habitat, we will be able to fund an entire house on those donations alone.

While we still have not been able to fund an entire home on Committee of 1,000 donations alone, last year Habitat was able to build its first home with a large portion of the money coming from this program. The Committee of 1,000 continues to expand, but there is still a lot of room for growth. The weekend is so close! Everyone over at Habitat wants to wish you a great, but safe 4th of July this weekend. 4th of July is the most dangerous weekend of the year in the US, and we wanted to remind you of a few safety tips. First and foremost, contrary to belief a cold beer or two does not mix well with fireworks and explosions. So make sure that whoever is put in charge of fireworks is staying sober, and of course always have a sober driver. Unfortunately the sun does not take a vacation for the 4th so be sure to stay hydrated, but don't let the sun get in the way of a football/wiffle ball game or two. Saturday's Build, Thanks Larry's Giant Subs!

Last Saturday's build over at the ReNew Athens site went very well. Thanks to the Clarke Central Football Team for coming out and helping the construction managers make some serious headway on the apartments. ReNew Athens is an enormous project that is going to take a lot of work and dedication, but with the help and hard work of our volunteers along with the support of the community, the project will be a major success. Special thanks to Larry's Giant Subs for donating the food for the Saturday build. I know I promised you a blog from Tom this week, but I got my dates confused and he was actually still out of town for this past Saturday's build. I apologize for the mistake, but the good news is that he is back and will be back to writing after the break this weekend.

It is unbelievable that July is already almost here, and that means one thing: anyone who signed a year long lease last August is about to have to start moving out. Due to the fact that we will be celebrating our independence as a country this weekend, there will be no build on Saturday. While the USA may be out of the World Cup, that is no excuse not to celebrate everything great that America stands for this weekend. John Isner, Team USA, and Athfest

Things are going great in Athens this week as we gear up this years Athfest. Not only do we get to celebrate a heroic last minute win from our boys over in South Africa and an outstanding performance from UGA's very own John Isner at Wimbledon, but we also get over 150 bands performing around town all weekend. Athfest kicks off tonight at the 40 Watt at 10:00pm with a party hosted by New West Records, Team Clermont, and Aquarium Drunkard. Its only $2 at the door so come out and celebrate the end of a monumental week for the United States and UGA's John Isner, and the beginning of an amazing weekend in Athens. No Blog From Tom Today

As many of you know, this year Athens Area Habitat held its 3rd Annual "Move to Improve" Block Party at 1645 East Broad Street, the future site of Habitat's ReNew Athens Apartments. Along with the help of our many volunteers, our Construction Managers Tom and Beau were able to complete one of the units before the party. I must say the unit looked amazing, an enormous improvement from the condition it was in before Habitat got there. Special thanks to Tom, Beau, and all of our volunteers. Keep up the great work!

Happy Summer!

Although we have been dealing with scorching summer heat for the past couple of weeks, today officially marks the first day of summer. I guess upper 90's temperature just decided to show up to the party a little bit early this year. 7:28 a.m. this morning marked the beginning of the summer solstice, making today the longest day of the year. Personally, I think the sun has been working a little too hard over the past couple of weeks and should probably take a break (maybe down to the mid 70's). We are in the final stages of setting up for the Move to Improve Block Party this afternoon from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m at 1645 East Broad Street. This morning has been full of shopping and errands as we get all the last minute details ready. After a trip to Sam's, we have tons of free food for everyone and can't wait to start the grilling! While some of us find fun face painting designs, others are gathering the tie dye materials and checking to make sure we have plenty of sidewalk chalk and games. Jonathan Casey, our project manager, is headed off to pick up the dunk tank to take to the site. With banners, signs, and an enormous, looming moonwalk, you can't miss it! But if for some reason you do, just roll down your windows and follow the music from the band. Free food, music, games, a dunk tank, and moonwalk, what more could you ask for on a beautiful Friday afternoon? See you there!

Tomorrow at 4pm we are kicking of our "Move to Improve" Block Party in celebration of National Homeownership Month. Bring family, bring friends, and be sure to bring sunscreen as we celebrate with Free Food, Live Music, a Moonwalk, a Dunking Booth, and other kids games.

Be sure to be there by 5:00pm, when Associate Editor of the Athens Banner Herald Don Nelson steps into the dunk tank. Afterwards at 5:15pm, we will be holding the ReNew Athens groundbreaking with Mayor Heidi Davison, Commissioner Harry Sims, and Athens Area Habitat's Executive Director Spencer Frye. Laura’s Farewell Blog:

I started at Athens Area Habitat a little over three years ago as a bright eyed PR intern. That summer I built a pirate ship out of a shopping cart (that’s right, you can thank my team for that infamous pirate commercial), worked on rebranding the ReStore, and fell in love with this organization. I sort of stuck around as an intern and I am still thankful that they let me stay.

Thinking back, it's hard to pick out highlights of my time here to reminisce with you. This organization has truly bloomed so much in the last several years. I've had the opportunity to be involved in countless events, programs, and initiatives that serve the needs of the community in a unique way.

I will never forget the heart that drives each person here at Athens Area Habitat. Anyone who’s been to the ReStore or build site can attest to the quality of characters we have around here. Every day is a new adventure and I am honored to have had the opportunity to learn from such wonderful people.

I am leaving to start an exciting new adventure, but the memories will stay with me and drive me forward. I will never forget the many volunteers, donors, homeowners, and community organizations who inspire me every day.

A View From The Builder: Tom's Blog

The flurry of activity continued this weekend on the apartments at East Broad as Beau lead a group while demolishing the last few units. Now we get to put them back together again...

I had the pleasure working with a hard charging group of regulars while framing out another Handicap ramp in Lexington for a well-deserving family(who are now able to leave their house). Thanks to all the volunteers who sweated it out digging through what felt like granite to lay up the posts! We would have finished it too if the heat wasn't quite as stifling. Not to worry though since there are 3 more waiting to be constructed.

Lunch and the ensuing nap time was graciusly provided by the fine folks at RuChDa Wings who delivered once again all the way from Atlanta. Mmmmmmm.....zzzzzzz.

Happy Birthday Mr. Green!

Today is a special day at Athens Area Habitat and the ReStore as we celebrate the birthday of admired employee Mr. Green. Mr. Green works from 9am to 1pm Monday through Friday to refurbish broken and scratched furniture that is brought into the ReStore. This allows for the ReStore to be able to accept a larger range of items, as well as improve these items in order to increase their chance of sale. Through Mr. Green's work, the ReStore is able to stay "green" by keeping usable items out of the landfill. Memorial Day, which falls on the last Monday of May, commemorates the men and women who died while serving in the American military. A View From The Builder: Tom's Blog

Demolition and remodleing efforts continued on the Habitat apartments at East Broad this week. Groups from Intuit, UGA and Gainesville State all jumped into the fray to gut 5 units while completing the framing and seeminglyunending tasks on our model unit. These guys and gals have gotten demo down to a science! Each unit is now only taking a day to deconstruct and clean. Lunch was graciously provided by Domino's Pizza on Baxter. Keep 'em coming (workers and pizza)!

Move To Improve Block Party announcement:

Maybe I am the only one who gets really excited about dunking booths (although I suspect thats not the case!) - but I am thrilled to announce we have another "target."

Don Nelson (Associate Editor at the Athens Banner Herald) has signed up to be in the dunking booth at 5:00 pm.

Frye and McKillip: County housing goal makes sense

We'd like to applaud Athens-Clarke County's mayor and commission for the recent adoption of a set of community and affordable housing goals, which specifically include encouraging redevelopment of existing apartment complexes.

Each year, Athens-Clarke County receives federal grant money to provide affordable housing. By encouraging the redevelopment of existing apartment complexes, we can get the most out of these federal grants. Recently, ReNew Athens was able to acquire and begin renovation of a 16-unit complex at an average completed cost of $26,500. This finished cost is so low because ReNew Athens is able to use most of the standing structure. Thus, by using the existing apartment stock, ReNew Athens can provide a renovated home for one-third to one-fifth the traditional affordable-housing new construction cost of $67,000 to $120,000.
Further, the adaptive reuse of existing apartments is more environmentally friendly. ReNew Athens' units are brought up to present-day efficiency standards, reducing this community's carbon footprint and water and energy consumption. ReNew Athens believes in and supports the adaptive reuse of existing apartment complexes in Athens, and believes this initiative demonstrates the new sustainability that Athens needs.

Art Appreciation

Today, we celebrate the extraordinary leadership that Art Ordoqui-Payton provided to Community Connection and HandsOn Northeast Georgia and bid him a fond farewell as he relocates with his family to San Antonio, TX. With more than 25,000 hours donated lin the last three years, it isn't hard to understand that Art has had an emormous impact on the community. His passion for volunteerism and service has inspired so many to give of their time and energy. And his selfless giving certainly set the example. HandsOn Northeast Georgia currently boasts a database of almost 8,000 volunteers - a veritable reservoir of potential community improvements.

Art joined the social media revolution and employed it as an outreach tool - to educate people about the programs offered; to recruit volunteers; to share ideas; to connect with the community.
